Winter Riding Module
The Winter Module is an add-on award designed to enable qualified Trail Cycle Leaders (TCLs) and Mountain Bike Leaders (MBLs) to work outside the awards’ ‘summer conditions only’* remit and to work in defined ’intermediate’ and ‘winter’ conditions, while still subject to the remit of their leader award.
The module consists of a 2-day training course and a 1-day assessment.
Training
- Day One of training is classroom based and can take place at any time.
- Day Two of training is practical and takes place in ‘winter’ conditions. This could be expected to be at short notice to take advantage of conditions as they occur.
Full details of the award are to be found in the SMBLA Manual (edition 2 onwards) or from the SMBLA. You can also contact Jules on 01479810676.
Assessment
*The conditions covered by the (SMBLA) awards and the winter module are differentiated as follows:
Summer
Include all but those when snow or freezing conditions are either prevalent or forecast.
Intermediate
Intermediate conditions include occasions when some snow (e.g. a light dusting or avoidable patches) or brief freezing conditions (e.g. an overnight frost) are either prevalent or forecast.
Winter
Winter conditions include occasions when a more substantial layer of snow (e.g. to several inches) or longer lying snow, and prolonged freezing conditions are either prevalent or forecast.
- Pre-requirements for Winter Leader Module
The module is open to holders of the SMBLA Trail Cycle Leader and Mountain Bike Leader Awards and will be delivered on terrain suited to the participants’ experience and qualifications.
- Candidates must hold a valid TCL or MBL Award, including a current relevant First Aid Certificate and be a current member of British Cycling.
- Candidates should have a minimum of 4 Off-Road Winter Rides of 2 hours or more logged in their logbook, of which 2 should be in terrain appropriate to the level of award level (TCL or MBL).
